Dhaka, 15 September 2026
The BIMSTEC Secretariat marked the 12th anniversary of its establishment with a reception in Dhaka, highlighting its expanding role in advancing regional cooperation across the Bay of Bengal.
BIMSTEC Secretary General H.E. Indra Mani Pandey highlighted progress in strengthening the organisation’s institutional framework, guided by the BIMSTEC Charter and Bangkok Vision 2030. Since its establishment in Dhaka in September 2014, the Secretariat has served as the institutional anchor for consultation, coordination and implementation of decisions among member States.

Bangladesh State Minister for Foreign Affairs H.E. Humaiun Kobir urged BIMSTEC members to sustain regional cooperation despite bilateral differences and tensions, stressing mutual trust, political will and practical implementation. He described BIMSTEC as an important bridge between South and Southeast Asia and emphasised stronger economic integration, connectivity and people-to-people contacts.
Bangladesh also reaffirmed its support for advancing implementation across BIMSTEC mechanisms and preparations for the next BIMSTEC Summit.
Established on 13 September 2014 following a decision of the 3rd BIMSTEC Summit, the Dhaka-based Secretariat implements and monitors member-State decisions aimed at advancing a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable Bay of Bengal region.
TNH TAKE: As BIMSTEC’s institutional architecture matures, the challenge is increasingly shifting from creating regional mechanisms to translating political commitments and decisions into measurable cooperation and practical outcomes.
