Iran Establishes Top Defence Body After Israeli Assaults
Iran has established a new Supreme National Defence Council following June attacks by Israel and the U.S., state media reported Monday. Formed by the Supreme National Security Council, the body will be led by President Masoud Pezeshkian and tasked with strengthening Iran’s defence strategies and armed forces. Members will include the parliament speaker, judiciary chief, military commanders, and key ministries, with defence, intelligence, and foreign affairs expected to join. The move comes after a 12-day air war that killed nearly 1,100 people, including senior military leaders, and targeted nuclear sites. A similar council existed during the Iran–Iraq war of the 1980s.
Trump Threatens Steep Tariffs on India Over Russian Energy Imports
U.S. President Donald Trump has once again threatened India over its Russian oil purchases, vowing to significantly increase tariffs on Indian goods. In a Truth Social post, Trump accused India of buying large volumes of Russian oil and reselling much of it on the open market for “big profits.” He warned, “Because of this, I will be substantially raising the tariff paid by India to the USA,” without specifying the rate. The statement comes just days after Trump announced a 25% tariff on Indian imports and hinted at additional penalties, though he has yet to provide further details.
