ALLIES CLOSE THEIR EMBASSIES IN KYIV

U.S. suspects of Russian airstrikes, and closes its embassy in Kyiv, followed by Italy, Spain, and Greece. The Kremlin dismissed a “freeze” on the Ukraine war, vowing to reclaim occupied regions of Kursk Oblast. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov cited the Biden administration of fuelling the conflict. The U.S. recently authorized advanced weapon transfers to Ukraine, while denying prior alerts to Russia. Meanwhile, Russia rejected claims of Baltic Sea cable sabotage as “groundless.” These developments signal worsening geopolitical tensions as winter exacerbates challenges for Ukraine.

HIMALAYAN BORDER: DISENGAGEMENT TO DE-ESCALATION

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met Chinese counterpart Admiral Dong Jun at the 11th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus in in Vientiane, Laos, emphasizing the need to transition from disengagement to de-escalation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Singh described the meeting as “extremely productive,” discussing a roadmap to rebuild mutual trust. Both sides acknowledged recent disengagement agreements and agreed on prioritizing cooperation over conflict. This meeting follows strained ties since the 2023 SCO summit. Singh reiterated India’s focus on confidence-building for regional stability.

18 DEAD DUE TO CLASHES IN NORTHWEST PAKISTAN

A suicide bombing at the Mali Khel checkpoint in Bannu, northwest Pakistan, killed 12 soldiers and injured seven, as attackers detonated an explosives-laden vehicle and opened fire. Mali Khel checkpoint’s structure and several military vehicles were damaged. The Hafiz Gul Bahadur group claimed responsibility for the attack. Hours earlier, a separate clash in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Tirah area left eight soldiers and nine militants dead, with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) taking credit. These incidents highlight escalating violence in Pakistan’s border regions since the Taliban’s 2021 return to power in Afghanistan. To tackle this escalating tension, Pakistan’s Federal Apex Committee of the National Action Plan approved a comprehensive military operation.

US RECOGNIZES VENEZUELA’S OPPOSITION LEADER PRESIDENT-ELECT

The U.S. formally recognized Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez as president-elect following disputed July elections, Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced on X. This announcement is a significant change in US policy towards Venezuela. Despite claims by Venezuelan authorities that incumbent Nicolas Maduro won, international observers validated the opposition’s published vote tallies showing Gonzalez secured over 70% of votes. Gonzalez expressed gratitude for U.S. support, while Maduro’s government dismissed the recognition as baseless and the called the opposition report “fraudulent” Gonzalez, currently in Spain for safety, plans to return for his January inauguration.

CHINA’S ADVANCED MILITARY TECH AT AIRSHOW

China unveiled cutting-edge military hardware, including the J-35A stealth fighter, HQ-19 missile system, and the drone mothership “Jetank,” at Airshow China 2024 in Zhuhai. The J-35A marks China’s effort to rival U.S. stealth fighters, while the HQ-19 targets hypersonic threats. The Jetank represents innovation in aerial drone deployment. The event also featured the stealth drone ship “Orca” and the upgraded PL-15E air-to-air missile. A dedicated area for drones made a debut in the show, indicating China’s increasingly critical role on battlefields, including in the Ukraine war – and any potential future conflict over Taiwan. Drawing global attention, the airshow highlighted China’s military modernization efforts and growing influence in the defence sector.
