On May 14, 2025, Baloch leader Mir Yar Baloch proclaimed Balochistan’s independence from Pakistan, asserting that the region has never been part of Pakistan and citing decades of alleged atrocities, including air bombings and enforced disappearances. He appealed to Indian media to refrain from referring to Balochs as “Pakistan’s Own People,” emphasising Balochistan’s distinct identity. Mir Yar Baloch recalled Balochistan’s declaration of independence on August 11, 1947, and expressed solidarity with India amid rising tensions with Pakistan. He claimed support from 60 million Baloch patriots and urged the international community, including the United Nations, to recognise Balochistan’s sovereignty.

INDIA BOYCOTTS TURKEY, AZERBAIJAN TRAVEL
Amid mounting public anger in India, travel bookings to Turkey and Azerbaijan have dropped by 60%, with cancellations spiking 250% after both countries expressed support for Pakistan during Operation Sindoor. The Indian Air Force recently struck terror sites in Pakistan and PoK in retaliation for the Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 civilians. In response, Indian travel platforms like MakeMyTrip and EaseMyTrip have suspended promotions to these destinations. Travel agents report over 50% of booking cancellations, echoing citizens’ displeasure. Nationalist sentiment continues to fuel the #BoycottTurkey and #BoycottAzerbaijan campaigns across social media, prioritising solidarity with the Indian armed forces over tourism interests.

TRUMP TOURS MIDDLE EAST HOTSPOTS
U.S. President Donald Trump is on a headline-making Middle East tour, with stops in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. After meeting Syrian leader Ahmad al-Sharaa in Riyadh — a controversial move given al-Sharaa’s jihadist past and recent ouster of the Assad regime — Trump announced plans to lift sanctions on Syria. In Doha, he received a grand welcome and confirmed a $200 billion deal for 160 Boeing jets. Trump’s claim that he would accept a Qatari jet as a new Air Force One has sparked significant ethical and security debate. He also teased a possible mediator role in the Ukraine peace talks.

INDIA BLOCKS CHINESE, TURKISH OUTLETS
India has blocked X (formerly Twitter) accounts belonging to Chinese and Turkish state-run media, including Xinhua, Global Times, and TRTWorld. The move follows a surge in online disinformation related to last week’s military clashes with Pakistan. The Indian government claims these outlets published false reports about the conflict, including the alleged downing of Indian fighter jets. Tensions escalated after a terrorist attack in Kashmir killed 26 civilians, triggering cross-border strikes. Although a ceasefire was reached on May 10, misinformation continues to circulate. India’s decision is part of a broader effort to curb foreign influence in its digital information space.

FRANCE-ISRAEL TENSIONS ESCALATE
Tensions escalated between France and Israel after French President Emmanuel Macron harshly criticized Israeli actions in Gaza, calling them “unacceptable” and “shameful” during a televised interview. Macron condemned the Israeli government for blocking aid, restricting medical access, and exacerbating humanitarian conditions. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Macron of siding with a “murderous Islamist terrorist organization,” referencing Hamas. Netanyahu asserted that Macron is promoting terrorist propaganda and undermining Israel’s right to self-defense. He reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to its war goals, including defeating Hamas and ensuring Gaza no longer poses a threat. Diplomatic fallout between the allies appears imminent.
