INDIA, US NEAR TRADE AGREEMENT

India and the U.S. are expected to finalize a “mini trade deal” within 24 to 48 hours, potentially shielding New Delhi from steep U.S. tariffs set to take effect on July 9. The deal, with a proposed average tariff around 10%, could pave the way for broader bilateral trade talks. President Trump has threatened higher tariffs—up to 70%—on several nations unless separate agreements are reached. His “take it or leave it” approach includes formal letters sent to 12 countries. This mini-deal could protect Indian exports and reset trade dynamics amid growing global economic tensions.

TRUMP MAY HELP BROKER CEASEFIRE

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu heads to Washington for a meeting with President Trump, expressing hope it will advance ceasefire negotiations and hostage release efforts in Gaza. Talks resumed in Qatar as pressure mounts on Netanyahu to secure a truce. Hamas has responded positively to a U.S.-backed proposal, but sticking points remain over aid and troop withdrawal. Netanyahu insists Hamas must be disarmed. Public protests in Israel continue, urging a deal to free the remaining 50 hostages. Meanwhile, over 57,000 Palestinians have reportedly died in Israel’s military response since October 2023.

SHIP ATTACKED OFF YEMEN COAST

A Liberian-flagged, Greek-owned bulk carrier, Magic Seas, was attacked off Yemen’s Red Sea coast near Hodeidah. The vessel was struck by gunfire, rocket-propelled grenades, and later sea drones, sparking a fire and causing water ingress. Armed security on board returned fire. No injuries were reported. The attack, bearing hallmarks of Houthi militants, is the first of its kind since April. Tensions are high in the region following recent conflicts involving Israel, Iran, and the U.S. Despite a past agreement to halt hostilities, threats of renewed Houthi action persist amid escalating Middle East instability.

UKRAINE STRIKES RUSSIAN AIR BASE

Ukraine claimed responsibility for a strike on Russia’s Borisoglebsk air base, damaging key aircraft and munitions. The move came as Russia launched 322 drones into Ukraine—the largest single aerial assault of the war—targeting Kyiv and the western Khmelnytskyi region. Ukraine intercepted 157 drones; 135 were jammed. Meanwhile, four Ukrainian drones were shot down near Moscow. President Zelensky and President Trump recently discussed bolstering Ukraine’s air defences and enhancing its weapons production capabilities. However, U.S. aid has slowed. Despite growing international concern, efforts to end the over three-year war remain stalled amid intensifying hostilities and regional instability.

TEXAS FLOODS KILL 67 PEOPLE

At least 67 people have died in severe flash floods that swept across central Texas, with Kerr County reporting 21 child fatalities. Authorities are searching for 11 missing girls and a camp counsellor from Camp Mystic, located near the Guadalupe River, which overflowed after intense rainfall. The National Weather Service had issued flood alerts, but scrutiny has emerged over the agency’s staffing and communication. The disaster has left communities devastated, triggering emergency response efforts and nationwide concern. As the search continues, residents and volunteers are rallying to provide aid and support for victims and affected families.
