CHINESE HACKERS BREACH US TREASURY

Chinese state-sponsored hackers infiltrated the US Treasury in a major cyberattack, stealing unclassified documents. The breach occurred through a compromised third-party software provider, BeyondTrust, which flagged the issue on December 8. Hackers exploited a stolen key to access remote workstations. The Treasury confirmed no evidence of continued access to its systems but launched an investigation with the FBI and CISA to assess losses. This incident aligns with “Salt Typhoon,” a broader Chinese cyberespionage campaign targeting U.S. telecommunications. Efforts are underway to mitigate risks, as officials stress the importance of safeguarding sensitive government data from future cyber threats.

MUSK CRITICIZED FOR ELECTION INTERFERENCE

Germany has accused billionaire Elon Musk of attempting to sway its February 2025 election favouring the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Musk endorsed the AfD in a guest piece for Welt am Sonntag, sparking controversy and the resignation of the editor overseeing the article. German officials labelled the endorsement as an intrusion, with critics comparing Musk’s influence to foreign meddling tactics. Musk defended his involvement, citing his investments in Germany, while government officials condemned the AfD as partially extremist. The debate intensifies as Germany faces a critical election following Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition government collapse.

STARLINK BOOSTS UKRAINE’S CONNECTIVITY

Ukraine’s largest mobile operator, Kyivstar, has partnered with Elon Musk’s Starlink to deploy satellite-based cellular services amid ongoing conflict with Russia. Launching in late 2025, the service will initially enable SMS and messaging, expanding to voice and data later. This initiative aims to enhance communication resilience during blackouts caused by Russian airstrikes on energy infrastructure. Starlink previously supported Ukraine by donating $80 million worth of internet terminals. Despite past tensions between Musk and Ukrainian officials over conflict resolution proposals, this collaboration highlights Starlink’s strategic role in bolstering Ukraine’s connectivity. Financial terms of the agreement remain undisclosed.

SUSPECTED SABOTAGE IN BALTIC SEA

Finnish investigators have linked damage to a Baltic Sea power cable to a Russia-associated tanker, Eagle S, described as part of a “shadow fleet” evading Western sanctions. An anchor drag mark spanning nearly 100 kilometres was identified, potentially caused by the vessel, now seized under criminal charges. The cable damage, which occurred on December 25, follows earlier Baltic infrastructure attacks, heightening sabotage concerns. NATO has pledged increased patrols in the region, with EU officials warning of deliberate actions targeting digital and energy networks. Finland, now a NATO member, continues to probe the intent behind the incident.

GERMANY CHARGES THREE FOR ESPIONAGE

German prosecutors charged three dual German-Russian nationals with espionage and sabotage for allegedly planning attacks on military and industrial sites. The primary suspect, Dieter S., a former pro-Russian militia member in Ukraine, allegedly conspired with Russian intelligence to undermine Germany’s military support for Ukraine. Targets scouted included a U.S. military base in Bavaria and railway lines transporting military goods. Arrests in April triggered diplomatic tensions, with Germany summoning the Russian ambassador. Moscow denied the allegations, claiming no evidence was presented. German officials emphasized the need to counter Russian espionage threats. The investigation highlights escalating concerns over international security breaches.
