KHAMENEI SLAMS U.S. “BULLYING” TACTICS

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has strongly criticized the U.S., accusing it of employing “bullying tactics” to force Tehran into negotiations. His remarks came after former U.S. President Donald Trump hinted at potential military action against Iran. Khamenei dismissed talks with the U.S. as a means of domination rather than conflict resolution. Meanwhile, Trump warned that something “very soon” would happen regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Despite these tensions, Trump revealed he had sent a letter urging Iran to negotiate—a claim Tehran denies. The ongoing standoff raises concerns about escalating hostilities in the region.

KIM INSPECTS NUCLEAR SUBMARINE PROJECT

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspected a project aimed at building a nuclear-powered submarine, state media KCNA reported. While the exact details of the inspection remain undisclosed, Kim emphasised that naval power and nuclear armament are crucial for the country’s sovereignty, given its geographical positioning. He warned against enemy naval activities and vowed that North Korea’s sea defence capabilities would operate without regional limitations. In 2023, Pyongyang announced its first “tactical nuclear attack submarine,” though South Korean officials questioned its operational status. Experts estimate North Korea’s submarine fleet to be among the world’s largest.

US ENDS IRAQ’S IRAN WAIVER

The US has declined to renew Iraq’s sanctions waiver, preventing it from purchasing electricity from Iran. National Security Council Spokesman James Hewitt emphasized that this aligns with the US’s “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs. The move aims to push Iraq toward energy independence, with opportunities for US firms in power infrastructure. Iraqi officials acknowledged temporary challenges but are working on alternatives. Previous administrations had extended the waiver while urging Iraq to reduce reliance on Iran. The decision marks a significant shift in US-Iraq energy relations, with broader geopolitical implications.

CHINA TIGHTENS NOOSE ON TAIWAN

China’s military has vowed to intensify pressure on Taiwan if separatist movements escalate, warning that pro-independence forces are heading toward a “dead end.” The statement, made during China’s annual “Two Sessions” political gathering, coincides with a 7.2% increase in its defence budget. Beijing, which considers Taiwan a breakaway province, continues military drills and airspace incursions near the island. Tensions with the U.S., Taiwan’s key ally and arms supplier, remain high. While China asserts its military stance is defensive, concerns persist over regional stability and the possibility of escalating conflict in the Taiwan Strait.

SYRIA’S DEADLIEST SECTARIAN CLASHES ERUPT

More than 1,000 people, including nearly 750 civilians, have been killed in violent clashes between Syrian security forces and loyalists of ousted President Bashar al-Assad. The violence erupted in Latakia and surrounding areas, with revenge killings targeting Assad’s Alawite sect. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported indiscriminate shootings, looted homes, and bodies left uncollected in the streets. Western nations, including Germany and France, have condemned the violence and called for an end to sectarian attacks. The recent surge in conflict follows Assad’s removal by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) insurgents, marking one of Syria’s deadliest escalations in a decade.
