FIRE ERUPTS ON KERALA COAST

A Singapore-flagged container ship, MV Wan Hai 503, caught fire off Kerala’s coast on June 9, prompting a major Indian Coast Guard operation. The vessel, en route from Colombo to Mumbai, reported an explosion before the fire broke out. Of the 22 crew members onboard, 18 were rescued with injuries, while four remain missing. The ship is listing and continues to experience explosions, complicating firefighting efforts. Five Coast Guard vessels are engaged in containing the blaze. This is the second serious maritime incident off Kerala in weeks, raising concerns about shipping safety and potential environmental fallout in the region’s coastal waters.

TRUMP SENDS TROOPS TO LA

U.S. President Donald Trump has deployed over 2,800 troops, including National Guard and Marines, to Los Angeles as immigration-related protests turned violent. The unrest erupted after ICE arrested several migrant workers and labour leader David Huerta. California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the troop deployment as “illegal and immoral,” and announced a lawsuit against the federal action. Tensions flared as protesters clashed with police, torched vehicles, and criticized Trump’s immigration policy. Trump defended the move, claiming it prevented destruction. Civil rights icon Dolores Huerta and union leaders have joined the protests, demanding justice. California officials warn continued raids could spark widespread chaos.

UNDERSEA CABLES FACE RISING THREATS

Over 95% of global internet traffic flows through undersea cables, yet these vital links are increasingly at risk from sabotage, geopolitical friction, and natural disasters. Recent incidents in the Red and Baltic Seas, attributed to anchor damage and suspected sabotage, have spotlighted the fragility of this infrastructure. Southeast Asian nations like Vietnam and Taiwan are especially vulnerable, often caught in China-US rivalry. In response, the EU has launched a Cable Security Action Plan and is ramping up investments in surveillance and repair capabilities. Experts stress that both ends of a cable must be protected, urging stronger global cooperation.

SPACEX DELAYS AXIOM-4 MISSION LAUNCH

The Axiom-4 missions, carrying Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla to the International Space Station, has been delayed due to technical issues in SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket. Engineers discovered a liquid oxygen leak and a thrust vector control fault in the rocket’s 5th engine during pre-launch checks. Originally scheduled for June 10, the launch is now expected on June 11, pending favorable weather. Axiom-4 will mark a return to space for India, Poland, and Hungary after four decades. Shukla will conduct STEM experiments and interact with Indian students. The Indian government invested ₹550 crore for his participation.

LIFE CLUES VANISH ON K2-18B

Initial excitement around possible signs of life on exoplanet K2-18b has been tempered after independent astronomers questioned key findings. Earlier research suggested the presence of dimethyl sulfide and dimethyl disulfide—compounds associated with life on Earth—in the planet’s atmosphere. However, further analysis by multiple teams found the data too noisy and the methodology flawed, casting doubt on the biosignature claims. New research continues, including a broader molecular analysis by the original team, but definitive proof of extraterrestrial life remains elusive. Scientists emphasize that while this isn’t a breakthrough, it’s a valuable step in the search for life beyond Earth.
