An Azerbaijan Airlines flight, en route to Russia, crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan, killing many of the 67 onboard. The Embraer 190 jet veered off course and made an emergency landing following a suspected bird strike. Despite a rapid descent and a fiery impact, 32 survivors, including children, were rescued and hospitalized. Condolences poured in from leaders, including Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev, who pledged support for victims’ families.

DENMARK STRENGTHENS GREENLAND’S DEFENCE

Denmark announced plans to bolster Greenland’s defence with a multibillion investment following controversial remarks by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump about acquiring the Arctic nation. Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede firmly rejected the idea, asserting Greenland’s sovereignty. Historically linked to Denmark, Greenland remains part of the Danish crown while maintaining local governance. Trump’s comments also included ambitions for neighbouring territories like Panama, citing strategic interests. The Danish Defence Minister indicated substantial upgrades to Greenland’s defence, emphasizing its independence and strategic importance in light of escalating geopolitical tensions.

JAPAN-CHINA RELATIONS PROGRESS

Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya visited Beijing for discussions with Chinese officials, including Wang Yi and Premier Li Qiang. While expressing hopes for improved ties, Iwaya voiced concerns over China’s military activity, the detention of Japanese nationals, and trade restrictions on Japanese seafood following Fukushima water releases. Despite challenges, both nations agreed on future high-level meetings and bilateral security dialogue in 2025. This marks a cautious step toward resolving long-standing disputes, including the East China Sea and trade issues, as the regional powers navigate a delicate relationship amidst shifting geopolitical dynamics.

RUSSIA ATTACKS UKRAINIAN DEFENCE INFRASTRUCTURE

Russia launched precision missile and drone strikes targeting Ukraine’s defence-related energy infrastructure, achieving its objectives, according to Moscow’s Defence Ministry. Ukraine reported hits across six regions, prompting rolling blackouts to stabilize its power grid. Ukrainian officials accused Russia of timing the attack during Western Christmas celebrations, though Orthodox Christians, predominant in Ukraine, celebrate on January 7. Simultaneously, a drone attack caused an explosion in Vladikavkaz, Russia, killing one person. These developments escalate tensions in the ongoing conflict, further straining civilian resources in both nations.

GOOGLE’S COUNTER-PROPOSAL TO DOJ’s

In response to the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) antitrust ruling labelling Google as a monopolist, the tech giant has offered a counterproposal. Instead of divesting Chrome or Android, Google suggests unbundling its app licensing deals, limiting exclusive contracts, and revisiting default search engine agreements annually. The DOJ seeks stricter measures, including Chrome’s sale, to dismantle Google’s monopoly. While appealing the ruling, Google plans to submit revised proposals by March 2025, ahead of its trial in April. This case could redefine digital market competition and reshape Google’s ecosystem.
