At the 2025 Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting, Warren Buffett expressed deep concerns about the U.S. dollar’s stability amid escalating fiscal deficits and unchecked government spending. He cautioned that such “fiscal folly” could erode the dollar’s value, leading to inflation and diminished global confidence. Buffett highlighted the risks of weaponizing trade policies and indicated a strategic pivot towards foreign currencies, notably increasing investments in the Japanese yen. With Berkshire’s cash reserves reaching a record $347 billion, the firm is poised for significant investments abroad. Buffett’s remarks underscore the urgency for prudent fiscal management to safeguard the dollar’s reserve currency status and maintain economic stability.

AMERICANS EYE EUROPE POST TRUMP’S ELECTION
A growing number of Americans are considering moving to Europe following Donald Trump’s re-election, citing concerns over civil rights, political polarisation, and social policies. Applications for Irish and UK passports, along with French long-stay visas, have risen sharply. Couples, especially from marginalised communities, are exploring digital nomad and retirement visas in countries like Portugal, Spain, and Italy. While hurdles such as job restrictions and tax complexities exist, relocation services report a marked spike in inquiries. Despite rising right-wing sentiment in Europe, many Americans view the continent as a safer alternative amid fears of eroding democratic norms back home.

PAK POLITICIAN SHOWS DISILLUSIONMENT IN MILITARY
Amid rising India-Pakistan tensions following the deadly Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 lives, Pakistani politician Sher Afzal Khan Marwat sparked controversy with a candid remark. When asked what he would do if war broke out, Marwat replied, “I will go to England,” triggering widespread backlash and ridicule online. The video quickly went viral, with users mocking the lack of confidence in Pakistan’s military leadership. Marwat, formerly associated with Imran Khan’s PTI, has been critical of the party and lost key positions. Meanwhile, India has intensified diplomatic pressure, imposing trade and port restrictions on Pakistan.

MUSK’S STARBASE BECOMES A CITY
Starbase, the SpaceX launch site in Boca Chica, Texas, has officially become a city after residents voted overwhelmingly in favour of incorporation—212 in favour, 6 opposed. The newly formed city council, composed entirely of SpaceX employees, will handle governance, including zoning and development. Supporters celebrate economic growth and innovation, while critics raise alarms over environmental impact and limited beach access. Elon Musk announced the news on social media, calling it a dream realised. With over 3,000 workers commuting and a growing residential base, Starbase could set a precedent for tech-led municipalities, igniting debate about corporate power in civic governance.

INDIA DETAINS PAKISTANI RANGER
Amid escalating India-Pakistan tensions, a Pakistani Ranger was detained by the BSF near the Rajasthan border. This follows the April 23 capture of Indian constable Purnam Kumar Sahu by Pakistan after he accidentally crossed the border in Punjab. Despite established return protocols, Pakistan continues to detain Sahu. Hours after the Rangers’ detention, unprovoked Pakistani firing occurred across multiple LoC sectors for the tenth straight day. India responded in kind. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts for Sahu’s release have seen no success. Heightened tensions persist following the recent Pahalgam terror attack, attributed to Pakistan-backed militants, and the provocative test launch of Pakistan’s Abdali missile.
