PAKISTAN VIOLATES CEASEFIRE
Just hours after a ceasefire was announced between India and Pakistan, tensions flared again as Pakistan violated the agreement with drone attacks in Jammu and Srinagar. Explosions triggered blackouts in several regions, including Katra and Barmer, with air raid alerts issued in Rajasthan. Gunfire was reported in Baramulla and Budgam, and drones were sighted in Punjab’s Gurdaspur. This escalation follows India’s Operation Sindoor targeting terrorist infrastructure in PoK, a response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Despite diplomatic efforts and declarations of peace from both sides, renewed hostilities threaten to unravel the ceasefire and destabilize the region once more.

SOVIET VENUS PROBE FALLS TO EARTH
After 53 years in orbit, the Soviet-era space probe Kosmos 482 has reentered Earth’s atmosphere and crashed into the Indian Ocean west of Jakarta. Launched in 1972 as part of the USSR’s Venera program, the probe was intended to study Venus but failed to leave Earth’s orbit due to a launch vehicle malfunction. Built to withstand Venus’s extreme environment, experts had long tracked its eventual descent. The Russian space agency Roscosmos confirmed the reentry without reported damage or debris. The European Space Agency supported the report. Russia aims to revive Venus’s exploration with its upcoming Venera-D mission.

GLOBAL LEADERS PUSH FOR UKRAINE TRUCE
Leaders from the UK, France, Germany, and Poland met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv, calling for a 30-day ceasefire with Russia starting Monday. Backed by U.S. President Donald Trump, the initiative aims to create space for meaningful peace talks. The leaders warned of “massive” sanctions if Russia refuses the truce. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized unity, stating that this marks the strongest diplomatic effort in years. Russia, however, dismissed Western pressure and insists on “nuances” before agreeing. Despite this, European leaders reaffirmed their support for Ukraine’s defence and long-term peace, signalling unprecedented cooperation among the West to resolve the prolonged conflict.

MEXICO SUES GOOGLE OVER MAPS
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced a lawsuit against Google for labelling the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” on its Maps platform, following an executive order by U.S. President Donald Trump. The order, aimed at highlighting “American greatness,” applies only within U.S. jurisdiction. However, Google’s compliance has sparked diplomatic tensions, with Mexico demanding that territorial waters be correctly labelled. Sheinbaum insists on distinct names for U.S. and Mexican maritime zones. Google defended its decision, citing adherence to official U.S. naming policies. The renaming move has reignited debates over sovereignty, cartographic accuracy, and political influence in digital mapping.
