In a precise 25-minute operation named Operation Sindoor, the Indian Army targeted and dismantled nine major terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Conducted between 1:05 am and 1:30 am on May 7, the mission was in direct retaliation for the deadly Pahalgam terror attack. Camps linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen were destroyed using advanced weapons like SCALP missiles and HAMMER bombs. Officials emphasised that the strike was based on credible intelligence, with a strong focus on avoiding civilian casualties. India affirmed its commitment to counterterrorism while maintaining a proportionate and non-escalatory posture.

INDIA, UK SIGN HISTORIC FTA
India and the United Kingdom have successfully concluded a historic Free Trade Agreement (FTA), hailed by both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK PM Keir Starmer as a major milestone. The deal, announced on May 6, 2025, also includes a Double Contribution Convention aimed at deepening economic ties. Leaders emphasised that the agreement will catalyse trade, investment, job creation, and innovation across both nations. This FTA marks a new chapter in the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, fostering stronger business connections and people-to-people ties. PM Modi also invited PM Starmer to visit India soon to further cement bilateral relations.

INDIA’S TAJIKISTAN BASE WORRIES PAKISTAN
Following a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, India is reportedly evaluating military retaliation against Pakistan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has granted the armed forces full operational freedom. A strategic airbase in Tajikistan, upgraded with Indian support, is emerging as a crucial asset. Known as the Ayni airbase, it provides India with the capacity to launch missions beyond Pakistan’s well-defended eastern border. With Pakistan expecting attacks from the east, a strike from the west via Tajikistan could be a tactical surprise. The base also strengthens India’s surveillance reach into Pakistan and could stretch Islamabad’s defensive resources thin amid rising regional tensions.

UKRAINE STRIKES RUSSIA AHEAD OF VICTORY PARADE
Ukrainian drone attacks have forced the temporary closure of over a dozen Russian airports, including those in Moscow, just days ahead of the highly publicized Victory Day parade on May 9. The attacks, which damaged residential buildings, highlight Kyiv’s intensified strategy to target critical Russian infrastructure. Meanwhile, the EU announced plans to phase out Russian gas imports entirely by 2027. As Russia prepares its “grandest” WWII commemoration, geopolitical tensions continue to escalate. Germany is shifting its stance under new Chancellor Friedrich Merz, pledging stronger support for Ukraine, while diplomatic activity between Russian allies Belarus and North Korea also raises international concerns.

AID CUTS SLOW GLOBAL PROGRESS
A new UN Human Development Index (HDI) report warns that global development progress is stalling, with aid cuts, especially under former U.S. President Donald Trump, exacerbating the slowdown. Despite post-pandemic recovery momentum in 2023, gains have faltered in 2024, with life expectancy and income growth stagnating and conflicts on the rise. South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa remain most affected. The report also highlights AI’s unequal benefits, noting wealthier nations dominate investment and infrastructure. UNDP chief Achim Steiner cautioned that without equitable aid and technology access, the world risks decades of regression, deepening global inequality and instability.
