Chittagong, Bangladesh, 7 September 2026

The BIMSTEC Secretariat, in collaboration with the Department of Law, University of Chittagong, organised an outreach programme titled “From the Shores of the Bay of Bengal: Advancing Regional Cooperation through BIMSTEC” in Chattogram, Bangladesh.

The initiative brought together students, faculty and academics to deepen awareness of BIMSTEC and encourage greater youth and academic participation in regional cooperation.

Delivering the keynote address, Ms. Sonam C. Namgyel, Director of Public Diplomacy and External Publicity, BIMSTEC Secretariat, highlighted the importance of regional cooperation in addressing shared challenges and creating opportunities across the Bay of Bengal region. She underscored the contribution young people, researchers and academic institutions can make to BIMSTEC’s future development.

Faculty discussions covered trade, investment and economic connectivity among BIMSTEC Member States, as well as inclusive and sustainable regional development. An interactive session enabled students to engage directly on BIMSTEC’s objectives and areas of cooperation.

The programme also recognised student participation through Young Scholars Certificates, awarded to the top three written submissions on BIMSTEC and regional cooperation.

TNH Take: The outreach reflects BIMSTEC’s growing emphasis on extending regional cooperation beyond government-level engagement by bringing universities, researchers and young scholars into the Bay of Bengal regional dialogue.
