US DEPLOYS UPGRADED NUKES IN EUROPE

The United States has fully deployed upgraded B61-12 nuclear bombs across Europe, including bases in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Türkiye, as part of NATO’s nuclear-sharing program. Reports suggest additional deployments to the UK are planned. This move, seen as bolstering NATO’s nuclear deterrence, has drawn sharp criticism from Russia, which warns of a proportional response. Amid escalating tensions, Russia has tested its Oreshnik hypersonic missile and finalized plans to station these weapons in Belarus by 2025, further intensifying global concerns over nuclear brinkmanship.

ISRAEL-HAMAS CEASEFIRE SPARKS HOPE

The Israel-Hamas ceasefire, effective January 19, 2025, brings cautious hope for peace after 15 months of intense conflict. Celebrations erupted in Gaza as displaced Palestinians began returning home despite the delay in truce implementation. The ceasefire’s first phase includes releasing 33 hostages by Hamas and hundreds of Palestinian detainees by Israel. Humanitarian aid is set to increase significantly. However, challenges loom as negotiations for the ceasefire’s second phase approach. With infrastructure severely damaged and thousands displaced, Gaza faces a long road to recovery. The truce signals a step toward peace but remains fragile.

KENYA REINFORCES HAITI PEACE MISSION

Kenya has deployed 217 additional police officers to Haiti under a UN-backed Multinational Security Support Mission. This brings the total Kenyan presence to over 600 officers, with plans for 2,500 in total. The mission, initiated last June, aims to curb gang violence that has displaced 700,000 people and caused 5,600 deaths. Despite some progress, 85% of Port-au-Prince remains under gang control. Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime called the reinforcements a critical move toward peace. Kenya’s leadership in the mission reflects its global commitment to security and stability.

KYIV DEMANDS POW ANSWERS

Thousands gathered in Kyiv to urge the Ukrainian government to prioritize the release of prisoners of war (POW) held in Russia and locate missing soldiers. The protest began with a minute’s silence and included emotional appeals from relatives of the missing. Despite ongoing exchanges between Russia and Ukraine, over 8,000 Ukrainian POWs remain detained, and nearly 37,000 people are unaccounted for. Meanwhile, a deadly Russian missile and drone strike on Kyiv killed three people and injured several others. Damage to infrastructure included broken windows, a water pipeline, and a metro station. Clean-up operations continued into the evening.

CHINA ALLEGES US CYBERATTACKS

China’s foreign ministry claims the US has conducted large-scale, systematic cyberattacks targeting Chinese telecommunications, finance, and transportation infrastructure. In response to US accusations of China-backed cyber threats like “Volt Typhoon” and “Salt Typhoon,” Chinese officials argue that the US lacks evidence and uses such narratives to distract from its surveillance practices. Recent reports from Chinese cybersecurity agencies allege US intelligence has targeted Chinese firms to steal trade secrets. Beijing calls for mutual respect and dialogue to foster a stable cyber relationship, emphasizing the need for shared cybersecurity norms and peaceful coexistence in cyberspace.
